Maitland Area School

Maitland | Yorke Peninsula | South Australia

This week at school we took part in national research conducted by the Griffin University regarding the numeracy programmes we offer our students, with a particular focus on how we work with the Maitland Children's Centre, and Point Pearce Aboriginal School with our Aboriginal students. The research staff talked to the management team about school wide strategies and observed Maths lessons in primary and secondary classrooms. Once the research is published I will make a copy of the report available.
Recently I had the pleasure of attending our Year 12 Formal. It was great to see the large number of families and staff support the group by attending the night. I am always amazed and reminded that these students are young adults on the cusp of beginning a new phase of their lives when I see them dressed in their finest.
Well done to all of our year 12’s. To the nine who began the year all indicators are that they will all achieve their SACE this year. I wish them all the best for the future.
Thankyou to the many families and community members who joined us on Tuesday night to celebrate and acknowledge the achievement of our students in 2013. It is the first time in my time at Maitland Area School that we have had standing room only. To me this is a strong indication of the ongoing support the community provides the school.
Thankyou to our donors of awards. I know that they are greatly appreciated by the recipients.

Bushfire Action Plan

The bushfires in NSW are a timely reminder regarding the environment and the dangers associated in which we live.  Contained within this newsletter is a copy of our school’s bushfire information. Please don’t hesitate to contact the school if you have any questions relating to how the policy works or how it would impact on your family.

Student Free Day

A reminder that Monday the 18th of November is a Student Free Day. On this day members of the SRC, Governing Council, Parents & Friends and staff will be reviewing our Site Improvement Plan and analysing the student, parent and staff opinion surveys to assist with planning for our future. Parent Opinion Surveys are currently in the process of being sent home to every family.

House Teams for 2014

Thank you to the large number of families, students and staff who have responded to our survey regarding our two, new house teams for 2014. A reminder that all entries are required to be returned by Friday the 8th of November and that late entries will not be accepted. Please contact the school if you have misplaced your entry form.

Music Concert

Last Thursday I had the pleasure of attending our annual Music Concert. I was really pleased to note, not only our secondary students participating but the large number of primary students also participating through the 5/6 band and the different choirs. The other component of our Concert Band that I had not realised was the fact that we have a number of students who participate from neighbouring Area Schools. This participation takes real commitment as these students (and their families!) to travel every week to join our band. Sometimes I think we forget how amazing some of the opportunities we provide students are within our community. It was really nice to receive an email from a couple who are travelling and decided after seeing advertising in the town to attend the concert congratulating the school on the event.

Pupil Free Day

This week schools across Southern Yorke Peninsula met at Ardrossan to continue our work implementing and monitoring the Australian Curriculum. Different subjects across different year levels are at different stages of their implementation so it was a great opportunity for staff to work in year level teams and subject areas.

House Teams

A reminder that the House Teams Competition closes this Friday (6/9/13). If you have a great idea be sure to get your entry in!
The Sports Committee and SRC will be meeting shortly to short list the entries we receive.

Royal Show Team

Good luck to our Royal Adelaide Show Team next week. The team, comprises: Danielle, Thomas, Brad, Kyle, Tayna, Harrison, Amelia (Year 10); Ebony, Lochie, Jesse, Anna, Ciha (Year 9); Ben and Connor (Year 7). All stduents earned their spot by showing commitment during Ag lessons and many spent numerous lunchtimes working with the steers and goats too. If you are attending the show take the time to visit our animals, students and staff. Well worth a visit.

SACE Evening and Subject Counselling

Thank you to the many parents and caregivers who attended our SACE information evening and subsequent subject counselling.
The information presented and the continuing  conversations are invaluable for our students in assisting them determine their future pathways. If you have a student or you yourself would like further information regarding SACE (South Australian Certificate of Education), please don't hesitate to contact the school.

Japanese Exchange

It is only about two weeks until 7 students and 3 staff from MAS will leave to travel to Japan!  The 7 students who will be making the trip are: Talisha Buckskin, Jordyn Ingham, Cody Willson, Luke Clifford, Ebony Short, Amelia Honner and Tayna Polgreen. The students will accompanied by Tim Tuck, Sarah Atkins and myself.  We are aiming to post updates on the MAS Facebook page, so stay tuned!
Well done to the SRC for their organisation of a casual day and classes choosing to give up something for the day to support World Vision. A   big thank you to the Parents & Friends for donating cupcakes and their time to assist the students in their fundraising activities.
As announced previously we will be moving from our three current house teams Yorke, Spencer and Vincent to two new house teams in 2014.
In order to achieve this we will be running a community wide competition to work out the new team's names and colours.
  1. Students, community members and staff are invited to submit potential house names and colours either by email (link below) or by submitting your ideas on paper to the front office by Friday September 6.
  2. The Sports Committee, with the addition of SRC representatives, will meet to short list the entries received.
  3. The short listed entries will then be published and final voting by students, community members and staff will occur.
Our aim is that this will completed by the end of this term.
So if you have a great idea we would love to hear it!
To date I have heard many suggestions, some relating to local explorers, local Aboriginal totems (shark, eagle, emu, kangaroo), local people of historical significance or simply a colour!
Have your say for this important school decision.

A big welcome to our newest staff member, Ronnie Donnelan.
Ronnie will be working with Trevor Allen as part of the Grounds team. He comes to us from Alice Springs, where he's had a wealth of experience working in the agricultural industry and with young people.
Last Thursday it was announced in the State budget that our proposal to re-locate the Maitland Children’s Centre to Maitland Area School was successful.  We are one of six similar projects across SA that will share $15.9 million to re-locate preschools to school sites under the Preschool Works initiative.
This is fantastic news for our entire community and it is the culmination of a lot of hard work by staff and governing councils at both the kindy and the school. The process will now involve a lot more detailed work to develop the project to the construction stage. Congratulations Maitland!  The concept plans are outlined in this newsletter.

Last Monday the school underwent a validation process. This process is conducted every three years and enables us to receive external feedback from a panel in relation to how we are operating as a school. The major focus is student learning under this process. Once we have received the report I will publish a summary and make available the full version for those who are interested. Thank you to the parents, students and staff who participated in the day.
