Rainbow Reading is a programme that accelerates reading development.

Each day the student listens to a set book while "reading along with his or her eyes"
A number of teachers at MAS use the Rainbow Reading programme as part of their everyday reading programme in the classroom.
Audio files of the books we are using have been copied onto MP4 players and the students love using these.

During this week Margaret and Roy Menner are visiting us again to work with staff and students on our literacy programme.

Each time they have visited has been a real learning experience for us as a staff and I know that many students enjoy the interaction that they have with them in the classroom.

Literacy continues to be one of our site priorities and one that we are certainly starting to see the benefits of. This will continue to be important as we move into the Australian Curriculum which has literacy capabilities expected of students across all age ranges.

During term one, we were very fortunate to have Ali Newbold appointed as a Literacy Coach. Ali is working with teachers across the school, working in classes and providing professional training, to ensure that we continue to improve literacy outcomes for our students.  To aid this process all students from year 3 to 10 will undertake specialised, web based testing. The data gained so far from the testing is very useful and will enable us to better focus on individual and groups in even more depth. This testing and analysis  complements earlier work with our visiting literacy specialists, the Menners.

The National Assessment Programme – Literacy and numeracy tests (NAPLaN) tests for 2012 will be held on Tuesday 15th, Wednesday 16th and Thursday 17th May for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. Students in these year levels have received an information brochure for their families outlining the procedures for the tests and answers to commonly asked questions. Copies of these brochures are available for any interested persons at our Community library and the front office.NAPLaN assessments are undertaken by students as a normal part of their education.  Our teachers will ensure students are prepared for thetests and we will provide appropriate support and guidance. For more information about NAPLaN you may visit www.nap.edu.au . Please do not hesitate to contact me or any member of the management team at Maitland if you would like to discuss any issues regarding the tests.

For the first three days of this week, Roy Menner has been working with teachers in classrooms on improving our Literacy programmes, particularly in the area of reading. It is always a pleasure to have the Menner’s visit as their skills and knowledge are appreciated. This is part of our ongoing priority in the area of literacy.
