In week 10 of term 2 four girls from our school went to Adelaide to participate in the 2010 SAPSASA Hockey carnival at the Grange Hockey Club.

They played 11 games over five days only losing two games. The first four days were sunny and calm, the fifth very wet and windy. The Southern Yorke Peninsula (SYP) team came 3rd in the top division, a very pleasing result for their first year in this division.

Well done to the four students from Maitland Area Schoo.

The SYP team was coached by Belinda Wundersitz from Maitland Area School.

gallery_linkOn May 7th I had the pleasure of being part of the YP Primary Cross Country Competition held at Maitland Area School. The weather was very kind and only threatened a shower right at the end of the day.
To have well over 550 students, their parents, teachers and extended families on our site was an absolute pleasure and the day ran very smoothly.
A big thankyou goes to the Governing Councillors, Parents and Friends, Cougars Netball Club, Apex, students, staff, parents and community members who made this happen. Well done to all, another great example of what we as a Maitland community can achieve.

senior_hockeyOn Friday, 14th May, the senior boys indoor hockey team competed at Mars Stadium in Adelaide. Mr Bone took the boys to Adelaide in the school bus. Student teachers Mr Watson and Mr Daughtry met us there.
Joel Stevens, Ian Nobes, Jacob Dutschke, Keigan Elliot, Angus Bruce, Lucas Marks, Jesse Williams, Scott Atkins and Josh Alford made up our team.
We were a relatively young and inexperienced team, but with specialised coaching from Mr D, we became more competitive as the day progressed.
Although we did not win any games, we had fun and enjoyed competing. All boys contributed well in each game, the team spirit and a sense of good sportsmanship was always evident.

Students walked the course, a new one that started on the secondary oval, then competed in heats by age.

There were several outstanding individual efforts and it was wonderful to see the support that slower runner received from their class mates.

Heat winners were notified by letter and will represent the school at the SYP Cross Country event in week 3.

On the 26th of March 2010, with a few team changes, we travelled once again, this time to Adelaide, to compete at the Mile End SASSSA Athletics Carnival.  We were competing against a wide variety of schools from all over the state.  We were in store for another warm day and the competition looked impressive. Within the first half hour of the day our placings began to roll in 1st , 2nd  and  3rd.  I went to make a record of what students had achieved, but I could not find any spare paper. I decided that I would put the few we had on the back of my hand so that I would not forget them for later, but that soon became a problem in itself.  As the list began to grow bigger, I had the records up to my elbow before the day was out.   With a feeling of success, and having had a very early morning start for most, the bus ride home was quiet.

I would like to say a big thank you to all of those who helped to make these events so successful.  Thank you to the competitors who gave their all and made the experience so enjoyable. I can’t wait for next year!  Thank you to those parents who came and supported, particularly to Mrs Edwards who helped officiate at Mile End.

Thank you to Mrs Hastings, Mrs McLean, Ms Godfrey, Mr Bone, Mrs Derington, Kelly Whittaker, and Joel Southwood.  I do not know what I would have done without you!
