News and information about our links with the Maitland Children's Centre.

At the Maitland Children’s Centre we aim to provide a friendly and caring environment that supports and encourages positive relationships with children, parents, families, staff and community to ensure opportunities for quality learning.

We believe that:

  • Each child is an individual with their own interests, personality and unique characteristics
  • Children learn through exploration and interaction with their world through play and practical experience
  • Children are in integral part of a family with whom a shared understanding is developed to support children’s learning

The Kindy has already visited the school three times this year as part of an enhanced transition program. In past weeks the children have visited the library, but this week we tried at our hand at being photographers.

The children had a look at an old 'box-brownie' camera, which surprised many by being very empty! We also looked at a (much!) later model DSLR camera then took lots - and lots - of photos on the iPods, with some children dressing up in animal masks for some fun shots.

We practiced inside with 'portrait' shots then went outside to take 'landscape' shots in the JP playground. I was much impressed by the children's confidence to try out new skills, their helpfulness to each other and their terrific manners!

Last Thursday it was announced in the State budget that our proposal to re-locate the Maitland Children’s Centre to Maitland Area School was successful.  We are one of six similar projects across SA that will share $15.9 million to re-locate preschools to school sites under the Preschool Works initiative.
This is fantastic news for our entire community and it is the culmination of a lot of hard work by staff and governing councils at both the kindy and the school. The process will now involve a lot more detailed work to develop the project to the construction stage. Congratulations Maitland!  The concept plans are outlined in this newsletter.

Last week we received the fantastic news that Browne Falconer, an architectural firm, have been appointed to undertake the feasibility study to move the Maitland Children’s Centre to Maitland Area School. The aim is that work will begin on this process before the end of the school year. This is an exciting development and I look forward to working on this project with the Children’s Centre’s Director Louise Hanrahan and our community.

Reception teacher Brooke Edginton and myself took the Reception students and a group of Japanese Exchange students to the Kindy on Tuesday August 14 as part of the school's ongoing transition programme. The Receptions thoroughly enjoyed the chance to socialise with the Kindy children and say hello to their staff. The Japanese students also enjoyed the visit, demonstrating their hoop-rolling skills and interacting with children of all ages.
