Maitland Area School

Maitland | Yorke Peninsula | South Australia

Congratulations to all of the MAS students involved in SAPSASA sports and a big thank-you to the students and their families for their support and willingness to help out during trainings and carnivals - it’s been much appreciated.

Ben Colliver, Jackson Bruce, Jarrad Powell and Ashley Williams recently represented SYP in the SAPSASA State Football Carnival in Adelaide. The team was very competitive winning 5 of their 9 games to finish 4th overall. The boys enjoyed watching the APY Lands team playing footy with no boots and doing back flips. Also amongst their highlights were the Beachouse and making new friends. A surprise visit by AFL Crows footballers Bernie Vince and Sam Jacobs spurred the boys on to a 12 goal win in their last game of the carnival! Bernie and Sam both spoke fondly of their SAPSASA days and the friendships they made. Coach Ed Satanek spoke highly of the boys’ conduct and sportsmanship on and off the field.

SYP Netball was well represented by MAS with Georgia Thomson, Lily McCormack, Bethany Sly, Ebony Short and Nikaya Smith gaining selection. Coach Lucy Tilbrook said, “The girls were fantastic representatives for SYP and their schools on and off the court. All students worked well together as a team, encouraging and supporting each other. Their netball skills improved as the week went on, winning our last few games.”

State and Regional Selections

Congratulations to Georgia Thomson who was invited to try out for State selection and has made it into the second round. All girls agree it was a great experience. They especially enjoyed the Beachouse with the football team, going to the Watermark for tea and making new friends.

Congratulations also to Anna Falco who was selected for the SYP Softball team and competed in the March Carnival.

Last week (20/6-24/6) Anna Falco and Riley Thatcher travelled to Adelaide to represent SYP in the SAPSASA Hockey State Carnival. The girls had an enjoyable week and improved their skills and match play. The team was drawn in Div I and, although not winning a game, each game was close and they topped the week off with an exciting draw in their final match. Megan Falco coached the team and said that Riley and Anna were great representatives for our school and the district. Megan commended the girls on their ability to adapt to the combined team and the leadership skills they showed in helping their less experienced teammates. The girls enjoyed making new friends especially as their team was made up with girls from SYP, Mid North, NYP and Hills Districts. As always the social outing with the boy’s team was a highlight, along with the shopping!

Jarrad Powell, Ashley Williams, Jackson Bruce, Jorja Schilling and Anna Falco all gained selection in the SAPSASA Athletics team as a result of their performances in the SYP Primary Interschool Sports Day at Yorketown. The team competed at Santos Stadium in May. Jorja brought home a silver medal as part of the 10yo girls’ relay team and Jarrad a bronze for his effort in the 12yo boys’ long jump.
